About 60 countries around the world are using DHIS 2, and in the Arab region there are two countries are using DHIS 2 as a national health information system (Sudan and Syria). In addition, DHIS 2 has been implemented by many originations in other Arab countries (mainly in larger NGOs).

Since the system is being used by many Arabic countries, it is necessary now to have a well-translated interface, RTL support and an Arabic version of the documentation and perhaps most urgent, the DHIS 2 interface. According to the DHIS 2 translation server (translate.dhis2.org), only 38.8% of the strings of DHIS 2 have been translated to Arabic. These translations are done by volunteers and do not follow any clear rules for translations. Based on our live experience using DHIS 2 at facility levels within Arabic speaking locations, we have found that it is very hard to use the system with the Arabic interface due to poor translation quality.

HISP Geneva and eSHIFT Partner Network are the overall project controller and submit artifacts and progress reports that will serve as a benefit for other translation efforts (e.g. statistics on the translation efforts, amount of discussion required to achieve a consensus, assessment of the Pootle platform). The completion of this project will also establish a baseline for the amount of effort required to maintain the translation core and updates over the release cycle of DHIS 2.

eSHIFT Partner Network will provide technical support to WHO IER in the packaging and online publication of the 100 Core Health Indicators for 2018, and provide hosting and operational support for the IMR, implemented using Aristotle metadata registry platform. This platform is a pre-existing open-source system originally developed for the Australian Ministry of Health to implement Meteor, their national concept and indicator dictionary.
